What Happens When a 25,000-Member Cattle Association Moves Beyond Paper

American Angus Association, one of the world’s largest and most established beef breed associations, was still relying on paper-based processes to manage critical cattle information. Here’s how moving to a centralized digital system changed the way producers captured records, managed cattle, and worked in the field.

Summary

Paper records had worked for years, until the scale and pace of modern cattle operations started holding teams back. American Angus Association replaced scattered notebooks with a connected system that put cattle data, field activity, tasks, and reporting in one place, giving producers quicker access to information and a clearer view of everyday operations.

About

Founded in 1883, the American Angus Association is one of the world’s leading beef breed organizations, supporting Angus breeders and producers across the United States and registering over 300,000 cattle annually. Through genetic evaluation, performance data, and breed development programs, it helps advance the quality and long-term value of Angus cattle.

The Challenge

The Cattle Record-Keeping System Had Reached the Limits of Paper

For generations, Angus producers relied on pocket-sized Black Books to capture breeding, calving, pasture, treatment, and herd records in the field. But handwritten records became harder to organize, retrieve, and act on as operations generated more data. American Angus Association saw an opportunity to take a familiar tool its producers already trusted and make it work with a more modern cattle management solution.

Field Data Stayed on Paper

Producers carried notebooks into the field and recorded cattle information by hand, making everyday record-keeping slower and harder to maintain.

Records Were Hard to Manage

As paper journals piled up, organizing, storing, and maintaining cattle records became increasingly difficult across day-to-day ranch operations over time.

Answers Took Too Long to Find

Finding the right record meant searching through paper files, slowing access to information and making timely cattle management decisions more difficult.

Field Visibility Was Limited

With updates captured manually on paper, cattle owners had limited visibility into what was happening across ranches and fields daily.

The Solution

Rebuilding the Black Book for Modern Cattle Management

The rebuilt Angus Black Book gave producers more than a digital record book. It brought cattle records, pasture management, field tasks, workforce activity, and reporting into one connected web and mobile system, helping teams manage everyday operations more efficiently and keep critical cattle information accessible wherever the work happened.

Our Approach

Starting With the Way Cattle Producers Actually Work

Digitizing the Black Book meant more than putting existing records on a screen. The team first mapped how different users recorded cattle information and worked in the field, then translated those workflows into wireframes, prototypes, and a web and mobile product refined through continuous feedback, testing, and training before launch.

1

Mapped Producer Workflows

Defined how different users recorded cattle data, managed herds, tracked pastures, and handled day-to-day ranch activities.

2

Built the Prototype

Created wireframes and a clickable prototype, then refined screens and user flows through ongoing feedback from American Angus stakeholders.

3

Developed Web and Mobile

Built mobile access for field use alongside a web experience for managing records, tasks, reporting, and broader operational activity.

4

Tested Before Rollout

Validated the product in staging, completed quality testing, trained users, and addressed final issues before Angus Black Book went live.

5

Legacy Record Migration

Migrated one year of historical calf records from Summit and spreadsheets, giving field teams accurate baseline data and full operational continuity from day one.

The Platform

A Clearer View of the Herd and Everything Around It

Angus Black Book went beyond storing animal records. Producers could see where cattle were, keep health and breeding information current, plan upcoming work, follow activity in the field, and pull reports when decisions had to be made—all without piecing information together from separate records.

A Clearer View of the Herd and Everything Around It

Cattle Lifecycle Records

Keep breeding, vaccination, health, and lifecycle information together while maintaining a complete record for individual animals and groups.

Pasture & Group Tracking

Assign cattle to pastures, create groups and subgroups, and maintain a clearer view of how the herd is distributed.

Mobile Field Entry

Record cattle information and update operational checklists directly from a smartphone while working with animals in the field.

Offline Field Access

Continue entering cattle information when internet access is unavailable, keeping field work moving in areas with limited connectivity.

Scheduled Ranch Tasks

Plan recurring activities, organize work by month, and use reminders and notifications to keep important ranch tasks from being missed.

Workforce Task Tracking

Assign work to employees and follow task progress and completion, giving managers greater visibility into daily field activity.

Centralized Cattle Data

Keep cattle, breeding, feeding, and health information in one system instead of spreading records across notebooks and separate sources.

Real-Time Reporting

Turn current cattle and operational data into reports and analytics that help management see trends, activity, and performance more clearly.

Turning Better Records Into Better Herd Management

The impact went beyond digital records. With digitized Angus Black Book, producers gained quicker access to herd information, better visibility into field activity, and a more practical way to stay on top of everyday cattle management. With less time spent searching for records or updating paperwork, teams could respond faster to herd needs, coordinate field work more effectively, and make better-informed decisions across breeding, health, pasture, and daily operations.
